Off-leash Areas

As a dog owner, you should make sure that your dog is on a lead and under control whenever you’re off your property. However, there are designated ‘Off-leash’ areas throughout New Zealand.

These areas are generally enclosed parks where you can remove your dog’s lead and let them run free. Off-leash areas are a privilege and if dog owners abuse the freedom that such areas provide, the off-leash rights in that area may be removed.

It’s important that you respect these areas and follow certain etiquette while using them. This etiquette includes picking up your dog’s waste and disposing of it properly, making sure your dog isn’t intimidating or annoying anyone, or fighting with other dogs.

Certain areas are only ‘off-leash’ at certain times of the year, so to avoid being fined, make sure you adhere to these times.
